Decision time
Bill (thinking to himself):
Sigh
Bill (thinking to himself):
So should I rent a sunset?
Bill (thinking to himself):
Or should I just buy?
Bill (thinking to himself):
I mean with interest rates at historic lows and all...
Bill (thinking to himself):
With enough money down, I could conceivably have an interest rate on the note that is lowah than inflation...
Bill (thinking to himself):
And I could always sublet the sunset...
Time for a fire sale??

...the only fire we're likely to see for a while ;(

Unless you count the one that Tito will get.

So it boils down to hoping for a one game playoff at the Trop. Ugh.

Excuse me, Red Sox, but do NOT give Showalter the ability to gloat about his "ass kicking" preseason comment.
Sack up, Nancies. Get the job done and make the postseason. We'll talk again on Thursday.

These feelings, they are familiar to me. So much of my first 30 years of fandom felt like this.

Fire, don't know which way to go with that thought HR, just so many possibilities.
It's not over, right? It's times like these that heroes emerge. Who's up for that?
Posted by: Jim | 2011.09.27 at 10:36 AM
Our #1 starter can't beat the cellar dwelling O's. It took them 14 innings to beat the MFY's AAA lineup. Seriously, what right do these underachievers have to go to the playoffs?
Posted by: Lazlo Freem | 2011.09.27 at 10:42 AM
What's this about Lavernway catching tonight? Why don't we pitch him?

"Oh, my God! We're having a fire ... sale! Oh, the burning, it burns me! Evacuate all of the school children! This isn't a fever! Ama ... I can't even see where the knob is ... zing grace!"
Sorry, gratuitous Arrested Development quotes are all that is keeping me happy right now. Well, that and pinot grigio.

Nate Silver took a look at our epic collapse and concluded it's one of the most epic (any worse and it'll truly be THE most epic).
He then looked at why and concluded that we have the stats of a team that's won more games. It's due to poor pitching (duh...), but more importantly it's the starters (duh...), but MORE importantly it's that they are the opposite of clutch in September. They have mentally given up at the worst possible times and situations in the game. Their numbers suggest they're doing better than they are and that means they're screwing up at the worst possible times, every time.
I put that on the pitching coach (and, transitively, Tito). The coaches in baseball can't do much about the abilities of their players but the one thing they can influence the most is the mental game...and our starting pitchers are coming unglued.

Now we are a 200 million dollar flop. This team is going to be a mess for the next 5 years. Oh well, beats a 95 year drought.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I want to see the Sox make the playoffs, but on the other hand, they don't even come close to deserving it. So many Red Sox have played like crap. Missed opportunities to bring runs home, missed catches, balls thrown away, blatant fundamental plays blown that high school players can make. It makes me sick to my stomach that the Sox have mailed it in and assumed they would make the playoffs while the Yankees and Rays have played their asses off to get where they are right now. The Rays deserve it. The Sox sure as hell don't. And all the bs and razzing that I'll have to endure from the stankee fans here, while annoying, is deserved.
What the hell happened? Some one's head is going to roll on this. Yes, you can put some of the blame on the starting pitching, but certainly not all the blame. It's just sad :(

If they could have just played .500 ball this month...
Posted by: soxinsix | 2011.09.27 at 10:56 AM
Okay, might as well try a triple reverse gooch: anybody received their playoff tickets yet? I paid for mine last week and still haven't received them.
Posted by: Bob | 2011.09.27 at 10:59 AM
Over? Did somebody say over? Was it over when the MFYs had us down 0-3 in '05?
It was '04...
SSSH.. He's rolling...
Hell no, an' it ain't over now...

So do you blame Tito? I don't. It's as though somebody is paying some players to take a dive. "It'll be easy, guys, just play like you were playing in April!" Fortunately, not all the players got the "play like crap" memo. The "September swoon" is almost over.

Also, look on the bright side. Exciting, meaningful baseball right at the end. As fans, we should be thanking them for the opportunity to care!

I received my home game 2 (which would actually be game 4) tix yesterday. First time I've ever been able to purchase playoff tix, so obviously that game will never be played.
Posted by: Kev | 2011.09.27 at 11:45 AM
Honestly, if this is how they're going to play I'd rather they didn't make the playoffs. Not making the playoffs is frustrating, getting hosed in the playoffs is humiliating.

Oh...too late,Guillen to the Marlins.

I'd like to think SOMEONE in the Sox clubhouse would say something akin to, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light." I would prefer them not to go gently into that good night

I have thout for some time now, since pre-swoon, that we have a big pitching coach staff problem. Even that douchebag Lackey should be better than he has played. I see mental collapse, I see impatience, I see VERY predictable pitch sequences without mid-game adjustment, I see players now asleep on the field due to slow ass pitching,... Not saying te batting hasnt failed at times, BUT if you must rely on 10 runs per game to win, you suck.

On the bright side, as a guy just moved back to town...maybe I might actually be able to buy some tix next year when the band wagon unloads.
Posted by: AnotherBob | 2011.09.27 at 07:32 PM
It sucks balls thats for sure, but as I endure the taunting of Stranger fans locally and the Pink hatter crowd that runs with the MFY bandwagon I can honestly say that with the April we had it is a wonder that we are here on the edge of the land of Milk and Honey, yet damned if it still doesn't still feel like a swift kick in the balls...
