Not a creature was stirring....

Without much going on Soxwise, figured I'd shut it down for the holidays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all The Soxaholix readers, and thanks so much for being here daily for what turned out to be another really fantastic year!

– Hart

Amen, h.b. and all y'all. Fortunately, I got the hack parody out of my system the other day, so let me say again, thanks to hb, and the rest of the alcoholic ne'r do well, thrill-seeking, mom's basement dwelling, over-acheiving, baseball-loving, meaty-thigh admiring, mfy-hating, over-educated, under-appreciated, and dyspeptic crowd.

mc 'n hny.
[yes, it is warm here.]

Merry Christmas, happy holidays to the great H.B., and all the loons who frequent this creepy space.

I'm on vacation after today (until Jan. 2). Today's the shortest day of the year, yet promises to be the longest for me.

I wish you all (even the MFY fans) the best. My godson's 1st birthday is on Christmas Eve, and it makes me realize one thing:

We are fam-i-ly...

Oh, and fuck the Skankees.

Merry Christmas to you, too, hb, and thanks.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Holiday Work party starts at noon for me, so short day. Yipee!

Then down to CT to see the 'rents for the holidays. Wish me luck. Thank God for booze.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Merry Christmas.

Thanks HB and all the regulars for adding immensely to my enjoyment of being a sox fan.

Merry Christmas everyone - love this blog, one of my favorites. I just wanted to pass this on - I just bought my Dad, 2 brothers in law, and myself one of these for Christmas - it's the official artist of the Sox - looks like he's selling it all for 1/2 off. The work looks unbelievable - should be arriving today. Check it out: www.markwaitkus.com. Found the link on the Herald's site.

happy birthday to you
happy birthday to you
happy birthday dear jesus
happy birthday to you!!
happy holidays HB. and to all the soxaholixs and the rest of the nation too!!

For those of us participating in holiday office parties today or this weekend http://www.boston.com/jobs/galleries/holiday_parties1206/

Thanks, hb and all the regulars (and irregulars) for the many laughs this past year. lc, who you callin' over-educated?
Merry Christmas all, and in the words of the immortal Sgt Esterhaus, "Let's be careful out there"

Merry Christmas, etc. to all.

In keeping with the true spirit of Soxaholix:

Bah, Humbug.

You only got the surly half of it, yazbread.

Throw us some lovable...

I just want to say mele kalikimaka to hb and all the soxaholix gang(right jen,da kine? :D ) First Spring training game Feb.28 can't wait

Happy Solstice, Merry Christmas, Happy (belated) Hanukkah, and, um, Fun Kwanzaa (?) to all!! And a Happy New Year, too.

(Except the Skankees and their fans, of course. ;>)

OK Bob, I'll give in to peer pressure.

Joyeaux Noel to all. Happy holidays and safe travels. May you all find a bottle of Absinthe under the Christmas tree this year.

Happy holidays to one and all. Here's hoping for a Santana under the Christmas tree and a fantastic New Year (WS Champs 2008). Safe travels!

Happy Festivus (for the rest of us)! First, the Airing of Grievances! lc, you're some place warm...you bastard, enjoy it while you can! Bob, you drink more than me...lucky bastard!

Ok, now for Feats of Strength!

Finally, they'd take away my Ph.D. in science if I didn't remind everyone that:

The Earth's axial tilt is the reason for the season!

Haha, Happy Holidays to all. I'll be back from MD around 1/1/08.

Thanks for a great year of Sox mania...I have really enjoyed all your efforts to keep us all in the loop!
Aloha from the Sandwich Islands,

Wasn't Christmas in October?

Happy Holidays to all!

May we all have pleasant dreams of beer carts arriving earlier in the New Year, a pill to prevent gout, Senor Santana and another couple championships wouldn't be bad either.

Feliz Navidad - that's California for merry x-mas.

Does axial tilt explain why SDU has not weighed in with holiday greetings?

Harwich and dakine, sing it with me:

Mele kalikimaka is the thing to say

on a bright

Hawaiian Christmas day...

Three and a half years in Honolulu gives this haole the right (if not the voice) to PROCLAIM.

Ah Bob...you know that's on constant loop at the shopping malls?! ear worm indeed. Fondest aloha and Mele kalikimaka to all. Thanks to HB for his continuing generosity..sharing his thoughts and this space with such a sordid lot. Cheers!

Merry Christmas, ya'll. The egg nog cart came by a few minutes ago - actually that may have been 20 it has taken me awhile to type this - brandy and bourbon. Lucid will be under my tree (I found it for 50 at a local store), WS Wally in my kids stockings, and My First Red Sox World Series win T-Shirt for my baby girl. I don't need anything after winning my retina blinding WORLD SERIES CHAMPS shirt.

Yes, Yazbread, it is partially the axial tilt (it is 6.50am tomorrow), paritally the red wine and waiting for the red berocca to fizz, but mostly I am still in shock from receiving this E-Christmas card from Bob

That's some weird shit right there.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!!!!! Thanks for all th entertainment and especially to those who bought me drinks at the Baseball Tavern, recommmended sushi places etc etc.

Is that shirt bedazzled, NolaSox?

Back in the day, my sister bedazzled my Little League jersey.

She's, uh, been missing since then.

Jeez, SDU, now everyone's gonna think I'm weird.

BTW, I also sent one to H.B.

No response so far. :))

You're secret is safe with us big boy.

It rugs the lotion on its skin ...

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. May Papi and friends continue to bring us all much joy in 2008. And thanks to h.b. for all the laughs

//BTW, I also sent one to H.B. No response so far. :))//

Friggin' hilarious!!!!

And, yes, weird and disturbing too. (But in a good way.)

Please tell me that disturbing Christmas card refers to Sriracha.

So lc is surly and lovable and Bob is weird and disturbing...oh and friggin' hiLarry-us. Keep up the good work peeps.

//Please tell me that disturbing Christmas card refers to Sriracha.//

Uh, yeah...yeah, that's what I was referring to.

Actually, the tat was supposed to be SANTA's opinion of SDU (and H.B.), not mine.

Hmmm, that sounds similar to our ongoing "the characters are not H.B." mantra, no?

Have a great Christmas/holiday, everyone. I'm starting beer cart early.

As I sip my Pacifico, this ESPN.com headline caught my eye. Seems a bit backwards, no?

Ochoa voted AP athlete of the year | Brady, too

Thanks for all the funny posts. Love your blog!

I'm late chiming in, but Merry Christmas to you all.

Aloha to all from Maui. Mele Kalikimaka e Haoli Makahiki Hou. Imua Kakini! (Go Sox!)

Yay! Santa (Mrs SDU) bought me new golf clubs!

Happy holidays, y'all!

I just shot Santa trying to come through the front door.

Don't let your kids wake up this morning.

Merry Christmas.

Another gift today received...fatso Clemens posting his mea culpa via HDTV.

If that doesn't implicate guilt, I'm not living in the gulag archipelago! Harrumph!

Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy 2008 to all of you in everything except baseball. Keep up the good work, h.b., misguided though it may be. Wish there was room for a tree down here in the basement.

Merry Christmas to all fans of the best team in baseball. Happy New Year too!

Merry Christmas to all fans of the best team in baseball. Happy New Year too!

Happy Holidays to you and all the other readers here!

Ethan Michaels

Sooo, big news is Fatso Clemens has hired a private dick. Get out yer magnifying glasses.

It's like we don't even need to do/say anything about the MFYs or their fans anymore, just watch them do it to themselves!

Ahhh, the schadenfreude...yum...

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/12/27/expect_a_yes_vote_for_rice_finally/ "> LET JIM IN

Agreed, SDU.

What kind of clubs did you get?

Callaway - Big Bertha irons and fairway woods, FT5 driver (sweeeeet).

Meanwhile we came to the alleged Sunshine Coast where it has rained for three days. The rain has now stopped to make way for the first cyclone in these parts for 35 years. Actrually the cyclone warning has been downgraded to 'extreme low pressure system'.

Good luck to the 'damned Patriots' tomorrow.

Hi kids. Enjoy the weekend. I might have something for Monday. In the meantime, let's be careful out there (My sunburn is starting to peel).

I am jealous of the clubs, SDU. Although I hear I am going to be in great shape playing in the UK. Apparently good courses are relatively cheap to play over there. Woo hoo! Happy New Year to all. lc- grab some sunscreen, handsome!

Hi Kids. With apologies to Roger Angell, I'd like to wish you a Happy Season.

Greetings, Friends

And all draw near
To hear the tidings of the year.
With fear, loathing and trepidation
I send this out to Red Sox Nation.

I am sure you will recall
When Coco snatched that soaring ball
That sent us Die-Hards into fever
Hail! Papelbon is our reliever.

God Bless Papi, Paps, and Tek
And Manny’s hair below his neck.
Tito chews and we’re transported
To figure out what Pettite snorted.

And don’t forget sparkplug Dustin
Lowell, Youk and Nancy bustin’
Out a granny that made us cry
In the late October sky.

Jacoby, stud, we raise the chorus,
Went ahead and signed with Bora$.
Wakefield, Bucholz, Okajima
Timlin bringing back his steamah

A special stanza set aside
For Beckett’s red-ass multiplied.
He came, he saw, he conquered all.
“Just give me the god-damn ball”

Schilling reinvented guts
And showed he had a pair of nuts
Oh, I’m sorry was that rude?
Just give us some schadenfreude.

We hail New York, of course we do.
ARod, Hank, Mo, all of you.
Yo, mofo Yanx, we’re happy that
McNamee is such a rat.

Torre now bleeds Dodger blue
And Roger, well he shot a few.
He got big. Was he a glutton?
Did he give up the belly button?

Matsusaka brought the heat
To keep Sox Fans from losing sleep.
Farrell, Brad Mills had the charms
To rest guys and save sore arms.

Belli, Hinske, even Kielty
Had cameos, so I feel guilty
Listing Gagne, Lugo and the rest.
I guess the less said the best.

The pink hat crowd got so excited
When Doc Chuck’s giant screens ignited.
And don’t forget Mr. L. Lucchino
(“Join the Nation, it’s better than Beano”)

That last rhyme sucked but not as much
As Geffner’s constant notecard crutch.
Dave O’Brien, Castiglione
Would sound much better if alone.

But still, we have Two Series Rings
And hope for what tomorrow brings
Santana? Maybe. Does it matter?
Manny is a happy batter.

And to the Soxaholix crew
Bob, Nat, Kaz and SDU
Harwich Rich, Sonoma Sox
Jason O, avoid the cocks.
(Just kidding, pal)

Jen, James, Mike and Pinstripe Thunder
(Birthing him was quite the blunder)
Bill, Doug, Steve. Arturo’s cart.
They aren’t real? You have no heart.

hb gets a special verse.
Laughs, brains, style, he’s so perverse.
Writing panels bright and early
Lovable, but mostly surly.

He keeps our passion in perspective.
And sprinkles it with fierce invective.
All the while we wonder who
Really stirs this bitches brew.

Right now we are in the thrall
Of getting Jim Rice in the Hall.
Mitchell, Selig, all the suits
Distract us from our baseball roots

Lester’s working on a splitter?
Truck Day looms and we’re atwitter.
Red Sox fans, keep hope alive
The season starts March 25.

Happy New Year.

sunburnt but lovable

Good to have you back Lou (:D

Nice, lc. You do have something. Happy New Year, everybody.

Nice job, lou! Surly New Year to you, too- wherever you are

Nice, lc. Hope your line about Jim Ed in the HoF is prophetic.

Safe New Year to all. Weather permitting I'll be tying one on in the Boston area.

What? No Patriot related gloating? You people should be ashamed of yourselves!

Go Pack.

we're just focusing on the next game, sdu. one at a time, and all that- the next opponent is well coached and good in all three phases of the game, etc, etc ;-)

btw, Happy New Year

RIP Willie Robinson

Happy 2008 everybody

Well, I hope everyone has had a great night. Mine was not so providential... if you saw the news about the fire in So. Boston, that was my condo complex. I have lost everything but my life and my dog and my purse...but am doing well! Have a place to stay, people that love me, and the faith in the Sox. Hope everyone had a better night than I!!! xoxox

Oh Natalie! That's so sad!

I'm so glad you have people you can rely on. I've only faced minor flooding as home destruction goes, and can't imagine what you're going through. Thank goodness your dog is okay (I worry about my cats and fire sometimes). I hope things go better from now on in 2008, and I think a lot of people here would give you help if you need it.

Thanks, Devine. I am still in shock. But optimistic. I appreciate the thoughts...The Red Cross is doing good things...

That's just awful Natalie. We hope all is okay or as okay as it can be.
Thinking of you,

sdu, mrs sdu and four year old sox fan.

OMG Nat,my thoughts and prayers are with you.RIP teal dress :(

nat, what can we do? We are skunts, but have resources. Please let us help.

yes, Nat, please let us help. hb, is there a way to set up a temporary "don't be like Timmy" link for Natalie's benefit? It's not much, but it's something.
Glad that you're safe in any event

Natalie - sorry to hear the bad news. Not exactly a propitious start to the new year.

Shit, Nat, sorry to hear about that. If it helps I'll quote my brother from when I had bad news on the personal front: "Not sure I know what to say, but I can fart at will, so there's that".

Aw, geez, Natalie...and you were just about to pack everything away and head overseas for a while, weren't you?

That's very upsetting to hear. If you need anything at all, you only need to ask.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=skunts "> SKUNTS

That's us SDU,skunty but lovable :)

Wow, Natalie, that's horrible! My prayers are with you. Saw the fire on the news and it looked quite awful.

I assume you knew the two people who passed away?

well played, sdu

Oh, man, I'm just catching up to the comments.

My heart also goes out to you Nat. And this is one time where I can say "I know how you feel" and actually mean it.

I had a similar thing happen to me back in the 90s. Literally lost everything I owned except the clothes on my back and what I could carry out in my arms as the flames started to close in. (Old, wooden structure, it went up fast.)

To this day, when I'm paranoid and go into "holy shit what is my escape route?!" mode whenever I so much as smell a whiff of wood smoke.

I'm with the rest of this gang when it comes to sending as much as possible your way.

If you, Natalie, set up a PayPal "donations" thing, I'll gladly link it from here and/or any other address etc to send help your way.

I am so sorry.

Ah, scratch my previous "know how you feel" because I'd missed on the first reading of your post that you'd lost your dog too.

I can't imagine having that loss on top of the other losses, too.

Thanks everybody for your kind, kind words and offers of help. I am a rich girl indeed... The outpouring of support has been incredible, from the Red Cross, to Southie neighbors, to my company which is renting me a furnished apt until I move to London in April. I am hanging in there, just traveling light these days. Sorry to hear you had the same thing happen, h.b. Does appear you can completely relate. And Tess is fine! I got her down the fire escape with me, thank god, or I'd be in a mental institution mad with grief somewhere. As it is, it's all just things. If I discover I need anything, I will definitely let you all know. I love this site for many many reasons, but you all have just made the number one reason abundantly clear. Much thanks and love.

I think the dog is okay, h.b. Everything *but* her life, dog, and purse.

Natalie, I was mulling over some ideas. It might be a small gesture, but I think others here might be willing once they read what I have in mind.

I'm guessing you had some Red Sox gear in your apartment. Jersey? Hat? Jacket? I doubt the first thing you're going to spend money on is to reestablish your fan wardrobe. I have an insider at Fenway who can get me a discount at their official store from time to time. If you name your favorite item or something, I'm betting we can all help replace that something special that you lost. It's just a creature comfort, but sometimes, I'm guessing those are the things you are going to miss the most once you are reestablished with all of the necessities.

Think about it, and everyone can discuss this idea this way.

I like Kaz' idea.
I have little memorabilia, but have one thing that would look nice in a flat in London.

And, I would even throw in a pink hat, however tasteless that would seem.

I don't think we have to give up our own stuffs, lou. I'm sure she'd be happy if we gave her something new to wear. :)

Can it be teal? :)

Yeah, Kaz's idea is great! If you're willing to at least let us give you a piece of the Red Sox fan part of your life back, Natalie, I really would like to be a part of that, and it seems totally appropriate for the site. Seems like a hat and a favorite-player jersey or something would be nice to have. Maybe you have a different piece of Red Sox-related memorabilia you'd prefer?

Think we could get Tek to autograph it ?

I hope you're doing well, Natalie. Kaz's idea was perfect, let's do it.

Ah, wonderful on the dog Tess! That's better news at least.

(I'm still in holiday mode. Can't read for shit.)

One of the benefits of my fire/total loss experience is that it made me less inclined to want to keep things, as I know first hand how temporary our possessions and keepsakes are.

To this day if you were to visit my home or my office space at work you'd either declare it very zen or very cold/stark depending your p.o.v.

The more you have, the more you'll lose...

Definitely one of those life changing experiences a fire is, or flooding or hurricane, etc.

Oh goodness, Natalie! I am so glad that you and Tess are safe. I love Kaz's idea and h.b.'s too. Whatever you need we will do our best for you.

Sorry to hear about your loss, glad your most prized possessions are all safe, namely your dog Tess. I have been away from the computer the last few days, so just getting the news now.

I live in Dorchester, not too far from South Boston, if there is anything you need, please let me know. My wife has far too many clothes as it is, I would be happy to clear out some of our closets.

What do you need? What can we bring over?

You all are SO sweet, and the Sox paraphrenalia is such a cool idea. But I am not big into pink hats (relieved lc? ;) A standard blue would do. Signed by 'Tek would make my millenium, since I doubt his wife would honor any other request I'd ask of him. I will send Kaz an email with my work address (as the old home address ain't no good anymore, and the rental still TBD) and you can all coordinate with him, if you truly want. THANK YOU. This experience is really humbling. It's certainly made me grateful for the richness of my life- and that includes this surly and lovable bunch. On the bright side (to your point h.b.): packing for London is going to be a breeze!!!

Oops, Kaz. No email, I just realized. Can you send me an email at the linked address for me here and I will send you one back?

kaz, please fwd info to me at email address.

Ok, here's what I'm going to do then:

I got in touch with my man at Fenway and he can get me a good deal on anything in the official Sox store. Just what we afford to get for Natalie will end up being dependent on what I collect, I guess. I'd like to aim for a Tek jersey (sorry, no autograph...sounds like he's in Florida with family and not around to sign anything) and maybe a ballcap. Any extra donations above and beyond the Sox gear can be given as cash unless Natalie wants me to buy something else for her with the extra money, I guess.

So, h.b., you should get an e-mail from me with the Paypal code for a donation button that should send to my PayPal account. I have also posted this message with one of my e-mail addresses (click my "Posted by" name). My posted e-mail address is NOT my PayPal address, please do NOT send PayPal to this e-mail address. I have posted my e-mail address to receive any comments, questions, or other discussion people want to have with me off of the comments section, primarily regarding the donations.

If h.b. decides on a different method of collection, like he collects and transmits to me the total sum or something as a way of protecting himself or wants me to host my Donate button on my own website elsewhere on the net, I am capable and willing to do so and will post the details here if needed.

Finally, I'll be in touch with you, Natalie, to deal with sizing/information and figuring out any logistics on just how you'd like to receive our gift.

I hope that sounds good to everyone involved. Again, if you have any concerns or questions that you want to ask off of the comments section, feel free to use the email link in my name below.

Natalie, sorry to hear about your terrifying start to the year. I hope it all works out for you. I was interested to see you're heading over to London for a while. You should try and catch a game of cricket while you're over there. To give you a better understanding of our great game (I'm Australian)here's a description of it:
You have two sides. One out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they're all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been given out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!
See, it's a bit like baseball. There are various forms of the game, including Test Cricket which goes for 5 days (7hours of play), but the one I think you'll like is twenty twenty cricket, which takes about 3 hours. Good luck.

I was very sorry to hear your news. If it happened on New Year's Eve, you should just consider it an unfortunate end to 2007 and view `08 as a fresh start with nothing but good things ahead.

I'm just glad that you and your dog (and your purse) made it out safely. Cliched as it may sound, that's far more important than the material stuff.

Let me know if I can do anything to help. Living out here in the Land of The Perpetual Wildfire (SoCal), I know more people than I could shake a burned stick at who have lost homes, condos and apartments to wildfires. Maybe I could get from one of them a list of tips for dealing with insurance companies on fire-related losses. Not as sexy as Tek's thighs autographed with tooth marks, maybe, but it might come in handy.

Guess disasters, for better or worse, are one of the few things that can unite even Red Sox and Yankee fans. My very best wishes and I promise you -- `08 will get better.

PayPal strips the html from comments except for minor text-level stuff, so I'm going to put the link/button in it's own post.

Working on that now...

Kaz, email me your mailing address. I have an extra Urban Outfitters card Natalie can use at the brick & mortar or online. (I think we should expand beyond just Red Sox gear, given that she only has the clothes on her back.)
