Tek Talk
Susan/Circle:
He of the golden gluteus, Mr. maximus, sturdy man ass of my dildo dreams, comes through again.
Tara:
I see you Captain, struttin' that ass, struttin' that ass.
Susan/Circle:
But Tek's l33t skilz go beyond his perfectly sculpted, proof that God is a woman backside and his walkoffs.
Susan/Circle:
And though Foulke is giving me the mofo heebie jeebies, El Captitano says, "He's going to be fine." Conclusion: Foulke will be fine.
Tara:
Righteous.
A lesser team (certain locations south of us) would have turned on a closer that blew of 3 run lead and left them trailing by 1 in the bottom of the ninth. Same stuff that was shown in the 2004 ALCS.
Dead on h.b. about Tek's words. "So let it be written, so let it be done." (apologies to Cecil B. Demille)

O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won.

As a longtime SOSH lurker, I've witnessed some SOSH members consider Tek's "intangibles" (in this particular case, his ability to work with pichers) in a very cynical manner.
"Prove it..." is usually the mantra.
Clement specifically mentioned Varitek's research and knowledge when he signed the Sox contract and continues to laud Varitek for same.
So, that would be evidence enough, one would think.
Even Bill James has acknowledged that to completely dismiss the unquantifiable would be ignorance.

21-13 on a makeshift rotation and no one besides Damon (and perhaps Nixon) consistently producing at the plate? Yea, color me excited. 8 games over .500 and the upside yet to be fully realized has me pretty happy.
Meanwhile, ESPN's NY bias is giving me good amounts of anger to work out during my gym visits. The Yankees winning a game they had no business winning gets the lead story on the side (how about a side-by-side line comparison of Clement versus Pavano yesterday), whereas buried below is the derisive headline, "Sox walk off, again" as if they are disappointed. Unreal.

h.b. - you continue to write a great blog. Not sure if I'm comfortable with the subject matter (Tek's glutes), but well written anyway.
FollowerOfTito - When did the New York Yankees EVAH 'turn' on Mariano Rivera??? There are times when they could have 'picked him up' but didn't ( I think we all remember when that happened), but they have NEVAH, EVAH turned on the guy. Just be happy with your win and don't try to use it to put down the Yanks. It just doesn't make any sense.
RYAN - NY bias from ESPN??? Surely you jest! This Bristol, CT based outift is so lousy with SAWX LOVAHS it is laughable (Gammons, et al). ESPN has romanticized the SHIT out of the SAWX and ANYTHING having to do with Red SAWX Nation. Honestly, there are days when I have to watch FOXSports (which is becoming a better alternative anyway since SportsCenter peaked a LOOOOOONG time ago) or the Madison Square GAHDEN network because ESPN turns my stomache with all the SAWX peter-puffing that goes on. Jeez, get a grip!

This perceived bias in the news media is interesting.
I swear that when either ESPN or Fox carry a Red Sox v Yankees game that the on air crew is totally, absolutely biased in favor of the Yankees.
Yet I hear just the opposite from many Yankees fans.
Related I know people who are huge Duke supporters who claim ESPN at al are biased against Duke but know North Carolina fans who say, again, that just the opposite is true.
And in politics, you'll see people on the left decrying how the media let's Bush and the GOP get away with things, yet, the those on the right, are certain their is a strong liberal bias in the media.
So are we all just projecting in all these cases?

I'll give tek his props, he's
a good lookin dude yet he seems
to have more testosterone than the
typical dude (tom cruise...) which
somehow makes saying he's good looking
seem less gay...
but enough about that, who would
have thought that Clement and Arroyo
would do such a nice job, must be tek
and the pitching coach.
slightly off topic, first baseman
Jeremy West was a ONE MAN WRECKING CREW
for the Portland Sea Dogs yesterday. He's good...

"the on air crew is totally, absolutely biased in favor of the Yankees"
My hatred for Tim McCarver is primarily based on this--that and his unbearably pompous, self-importance...
Posted by: SawxSince67 | 2005.05.12 at 10:56 AM
Sawx-
What about the fact that McCarver just sucks? I figured that would be the #1 reason.
Couldn't see the game yesterday since I was too busy freezing my ass off at Wrigley. 75 and sunny for 5 days, then I have tickets and it goes into the forties. I need a place with a freaking roof.
Posted by: Sean O | 2005.05.12 at 11:09 AM
h.b - You may be correct about projecting. I AM a DUKE fan and even I can see that ESPN, and Dickie V. in particular LOVE the Blue Devils.
SAWXSince67 - You and I agree that McCarver is a pompous ass. However, I have the exact opposite opinion of him. IN my opinion (and in the opinion of ANY Yankee fan I've ever spoken to on the subject), McCarver has an abject HATRED of the Yankees that he is barely able to contain while on the air. God, I friggin' hate that guy.

Miscellaneous ramblings from a lifer who actually saw Geiger play......
Wouldn't surfer dude punk Eric Burns be a perfect fit for the pinstripes? Regardless of his .200 average he has that cocksure strut we all associate w/the Yanks. Of course we have the memory of Burns, in '03, limping like a bitch behind home, after bouncing harmlessly off our (tip of the hat to today's ladies) granite-assed Catcher.
How much longer do we have to endure this mopey Eeyore looking K-horn @ 2b??? Based on 450 at bats, he's on a pace for 190 Ks. That's 190 ABs where nothing happens, no hits, no Sac flies, no hitting behind the runner...zilch. Mean while, the anti-Bellhorn, Dustin Pedroia floursihes at AA. This kid plays with passion, is above average defensively, has offensive skills. I'm hoping for a Sept. call-up....at the latest.
Posted by: GaryGeiger | 2005.05.12 at 11:28 AM
Amen to to that thought, GG. I don't give a shit if K-Horn hits .350, I can't stand looking at the humorless prig. The baseball equivalent of my mother-in-law, would it kill you to crack a smile, Bell?

Wow- A MFY fan AND an Duke fan? Lemme guess Bri-bri- you like the Red Wings, Lakers, and Patriots too. From an article I recently came across:
"Rooting for the perennial victor is like cheering on the heartless and emotionally void Metermaid while she's barely acknowledging the flailing victim whose car is being towed away. It takes no character; no thought. "

way off topic: do u guys remember the libanese chicks? I came across this page with israeli chicks looking very sexy with toys (and I ain't talking about sex toys!). Ain't nuthing sexier than good looking chicks with automatic weapons on their back!

NV in SD - the first NCAA tourney I ever watched from start to finish was in 1978. An unheralded DUKE team with Gene Banks, Jim Spanarkle and Mike Giminski lost in the finals to Kentucky (Rick Robey). I fell in love with that team and have rooted for them ever since. I make no apologies. Their recent success aside (God bless coach K), they have not been 'perennial' winners since 1978. For the record, my other rooting interests include the NY Giants in football and the NY Rangers in hockey. There's a lot of suffering there. I couldn't care less about the NBA and I'm stunned that people actually still watch this paralyzingly boring bastardization of Dr. Naismith's game.
"rooting for the perrenial winner...takes no character; no thought". If things continue to go the way they've been going this year, couldn't that same thing be said of folks who root for the SAWX and the Pats???

I've always thought that someone should try an overtly biased and unsensored news/sportscast. I mean Rem-dogg and the Beav are okay, but I'm talking HBO, put the kids to bed, melt your V-chip color commentary. That's why nothing beats going to Fenway because you can usually find that type of play-by-play from the four guys sitting in the row in front of you. The raw emotion of a *true* Sox fan rippin' on Cla's name because he just gave up a three-spot is priceless.

H.B., projection is the wrong term there. Us social psychologists refer to this as the "Hostile Media Phenomenon," a phrase coined by Vallone, Ross, & Lepper (1985). the HMP refers to opposing partisan groups both perceiving neutral media presentations as being hostile to their side, and attributing bias to the source of the presentations.
Posted by: Bergs | 2005.05.12 at 01:08 PM
Bergs,
Thanks for the clarification on that. Excellent. I didn't know there was an actual term from psychology to describe the phenomenon.
That HMP seems to be exactly what is going on.

McCarver played against the Yanks in the 1964 World Series which was won in seven games by the Cards. He was a fierce competitor and team the leader of St. Louis. Now he is nothing more than a bought and paid for Yankee bitch..
Posted by: Voodoo Vern | 2005.05.12 at 01:43 PM
If available, I would much rather listen to the hometown announcers on the radio (or internet broadcast) whenever watching the Sox. If unavailable, and the announcer is McCarver, I watch with no sound so I don't feel an uncontrollable urge to punch my tv. He and Joe Buck are without question the worst announcing tandem in the history of sports, and last year's ALCS was the perfect example of that. There is no way McCarver could've been any more biased towards the MFY.

"I've always thought that someone should try an overtly biased and unsensored news/sportscast."
have you ever heard Tommy Heinson's great work during a Celtics game? it's borderline sickening, but you gotta love it!
Posted by: ric | 2005.05.12 at 02:11 PM
HMP is definitely an interesting way of looking at it, no doubt. I don't mind local networks (NESN, YES) or radio stations throwing out the barely-concealed bias, but the HMP definitely dampens my enjoyment of nationally broadcast games.
The exception to the rule: Paul Maguire. I hate him no matter what game he's covering. The Pats don't need to be playing the the Colts for me to want to put a hurt on.

Just to throw a female voice in here, allow me to claim solidarity with the ladies in today's strip. I almost feel bad for straight male Sox fans... they can love the 'Tek, but they are denied the full spectrum of his true awesomeness. Like seeing a painting and appreciating its technical stylings, but being forced to see it in black and white while someone else can see all the technical perfection AND the vibrant colors.
In other words, mmmmm catcher ass.
Posted by: Boston Fan in Michigan | 2005.05.12 at 02:22 PM
I got to sit behind #33 on April 15. Statue of David has got NOTHING on VTek when it comes to perfect male form.
Posted by: Mrs. MLB | 2005.05.12 at 03:10 PM
My Celebrity Husband Jason Varitek has the nicest thighs I have ever seen on a man...god, I would do terrible, terrible things to Tek...things that are illegal in some states...
Posted by: Catherine | 2005.05.12 at 03:21 PM
Anybody remember the highlight when Deion played a football game and a world series game in the same day and after the Reds won the WS McCarver talked shit to Deion Sanders, Deion dumped a bucket of ice water on him and McCarver goes "Your a real class act Deion!" god i lvoed those days!
Posted by: The Rat | 2005.05.12 at 03:53 PM
Can all this positive female vibe for Tek be the secret to his powers? Maybe we should try and get the ladies a little more thrilled with Foulkie or Schill? Why did we waste the visit by the Fab 5 on Damon, Belli, Millar and such. What would it take gals? Thighmaster? Prosthetic ass and thigh implants? Help a pitching staff out, huh?
Posted by: Follower of Tito | 2005.05.12 at 04:31 PM
This is the first I realized that Tek was so good looking and desired by women. As a heterosexual male, I honestly can't judge that sorta thing for shit. I always thought Damon was the aesthetically-pleasing member of the roster since my wife refers to him as 'Handsome Johnny' and makes me rewind his at-bats on the Tivo. I refuse to let her see his Puma commercial, as that might lead to beef twixt him and me.
Posted by: da kine | 2005.05.12 at 04:52 PM
no shit, i actually agree with bigbri on something. the nba blows.
Posted by: different ryan | 2005.05.12 at 04:55 PM
I recall listening to game six of the 2003 ALCS on ESPN (Does anybody think that the N in ESPN is for New York?) radio and hearing that the Red Sox homers were all wind blown and the MFY's homers were well placed hits capitalized of Red Sox pitching mistakes. Anybody else agree?

Maybe she just thinks he's the best leadoff hitter in the major leagues? She likes seeing all those pitches? :) No, just kidding, Johnny is hot. But he has NOTHING on Varitek, in my opinon.

Well, I'll tell you this, Arroyo is sexyhot too, and he's doing pretty well, so maybe your theory is correct. It would take an awful lot for me to drool over Foulkie, heh. :) First off, lose the gut!
