Oh, I thought you'd nevah ask. When and where, Papito?
Hah. But what's the deal anyway? I mean the ProJo says Papi came into camp in "excellent shape" while the Globe says he's only "slightly trimmer"?
Pool or the pond, girl, pool or the pond.

Papi's been using his Foreman grill a lot more. See, it has an incline, so the fat runs off into a little container. So it's easier for Papi to drink.

Aw, the Caddyshack link just made me SO happy. "This is a cross of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus on it..."
I have practically no expectations of Papi any more. I thank him for '04 and '07, try to ignore the steriod implications of his fairly precipitous rise and fall, and hope we don't hang on too long out of nostalgia. Makes my heart hurt to say it, but I turned a corner on this issue of fading stardom with Tek: I still want to see the Cap naked (and do any manner of unspeakable things to those thighs) but not in the lineup...

Is Papi in shape?
I think I'll defer to Amalie Benjamin's Twitter on the topic:
"Just saw Ortiz: hummina-hummina-hummina-hahwaa!"
(no, not really)

Tek (Papi, fill in the blank) you're nothing to me now. You're not a brother, you're not a friend. I don't want to know you or what you do. I don't want to see you at the ballpark, I don't want you near my house. When you see our manager, I want to know a day in advance, so I won't be there. You understand?

Do we not remember the gut wrenching after affects of Bucky Fucking Dent, Bill Buckner and Aaron Fucking Boone? Do we not recall the unmitigated joy of 2004 - "Now I can Die Happy" & placing Red Sox paraphanalia on gravestones throughout NE? Are we so spoiled by 2007 that we forget what Big Papi, Manny and Tek did for our collective phyche? Have we now become Pats fans - what have you done for me lately? and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out?

Steve, there seems to be a failure of logic there. I will never forget what Big Papi and Tek did for us in '04 and '07 (as I said), and will lionize them in my memory all of my days. That said, just as I would not want the well-loved world-class surgeon who saved many lives operating on me when his eyesight has begun to go and his hands to shake, so do I think that past achievements, sentiment and reputation have little place in fielding a winning team each year. I want a WS ring, not to watch an old-timers nostalgia charity game.

Steve - Aaron Bleeping Boone announced his retirement from Professisonal Baseball today. Good fucking riddence...
Wait, what? He's taking a job at ESPN as an on-air analyst? Oh, for fuck's sake!!

Natalie, I have (figuratively, at least) two more WS rings than I ever expected to have. Yes I would like a few more, but not at the cost of disrespecting Big Papi and Tek. This isn't heart surgery, it's a child's game (that I am way too emotionally invested in). I think Theo and Tito have struck the proper balance between semtimentality and winning so far, and I trust they will continue to do so.

The only people who can disrespect Papi and Tek are Papi and Tek (and an opposing pitcher with a fastball that tops 90). I too love them for their accomplishments (have a 5x7 of Tek giving A-Rod the business on 7.24.04 here on my desk at work) but have as much confidence in Johnny Pesky digging in for a clutch at bat as I do these two now. Can't Theo find a A or AA managing job for Tek and start moving him through the farm system? Hasn't that always seems like the logical progression?

I guess it comes down to your definition of disrespect. I don't feel its disrespectful to not offer them inflated contracts or take them out of the lineup when they aren't performing at the level needed. It's a business. If I stopped being able to retain my clients, it wouldn't be disrespectful of my company to let me go, just as it would not diminish all the accolades they bestowed upon me when I was good at my job. I agree with PH- players are the ones who force disrespect upon themselves by not ceding gracefully to those who can better bring their teams to victory. And this is coming from someone who loves Papi and (swoon) Tek more than most of her extended family.

Natalie, please note the placement of my original post in the stream of comments, i.e., right after "you're nothing to me now". That is disrespect in my book.

Eh, I took the Godfatherr quote as tongue in cheek. Maybe I was wrong?

I thought it was time for a Godfather, Pt. 2 quote. Part tongue in cheek, part throwing fuel on the fire.
