Getting the piss drained out of us

Mike:
Hmmm …

Bill:
Well, it's like we were saying yestahday

Bill:
Aftah a beat down you pick yourself off the floor and get back in there for anothah round where, of course, you'll be beat down twice as hahd as the first time.

Mike:
Is Tampa Bay good or are we just bad?

Bill:
Does it mattah when you're down to what could be the final game of the season?

Mike:
Bob Ryan calls the Rays a "youthful dream team" who "could be an impediment to [our] AL East success for many more years."

Bill:
Maybe. Yeah. Whatev. I'm just too friggin black and blue to contemplate the future right now.

Bill:
When this is ovah, I need to go on a long vacation from sports.

Mike:
It's like Bill Simmons says, "You love sports most when you're 16, then you love it a little bit less every year."

Bill:
Tell me about it.

Comments

It was cold. The fans ate shit sandwiches.

eh

My head hurts.

But hey, we have the always reliable, never on-and-off Dice-K tomorrow, right?

Then, hopefully, the obviously injured Beckett.

Then hopefully-squared, the man.

Spanked twice in our own Sandlot is bad. However we all remember what team has been here twice and done the job!

Wow, Mike must be REALLY down to be quoting Simmons.

My wife asked if Tampa Bay is just that much better than the Sox. Well, obviously, right now they are, but it took a confluence of events to get here. No Lowell. No Beckett. No Papi. A Lester breakdown. And so forth.

Which is not to take away from the Rays in any way. They are a really good team playing really, really well. I'm sure they'll be contenders for another few years until players start leaving for bigger contracts. In fact, I would say the Rays are Boston's main rivals in the division now for the foreseeable future.

Mrs. Soulie asked why the Zen attitude towards the playoffs this year. We don't have the pitching, and we don't have the hitting. We have now seen two championship teams, so we really know what they look like. This doesn't look like one. The way the Rays are playing? Maybe. They are playing some fine, fine baseball to boot. But Upton is one ugly sonofabitch, huh?

And with the MFYs not making the playoffs, much of my angst just never got off the ground. Four ALCS appearances in six years, plus a great young core for years to come? Losing sucks, but knowing you'll be back next year takes the sting out a little.

We need another Dick Wolf Law & Order spin-off to find out what happened to the Sox pitching and hitting. For both to go MIA at the same time is a crime.

I fear for the NL team if the Rays continue this roll.

I also fear for the Sox and the AL East for years to come.

Actually Joe I think CSI is more in order as we are soon going to be doing a postmortem on this season.

I just don't feel the comeback coming like I have in previous seasons.

"Nobody expects the [Red Sox comeback]! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn!"

Sorry, punchy this afternoon after catching half the game in the wee hours.

So no one thinks the Rays will make like the Marlins if they win the WS? A little fire sale action?

The Rays don't have to yet - they've got at least 3 years with most of that team until arbitration / free agency becomes an issue. The Marlins are trapped in a bad lease that makes it difficult to make money even when they have a full stadium. Thus all the wrangling aver a baseball only stadium in Miami...

Ugly. Just butt ugly. I have to confess, I just couldn't bring myself to watch past the top half of the third.

H.B - I'm a little surprised no reference to Ken Rosenthal's article on Fox Sports about how racist the Red Sox front office is. I heard his interview on Dale and Holly and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Sure, Boston was the last of the MLB teams to integrate in the late 50's and all that shit, but now?? WTF? Didn't really think Fox News values spread to their sports reporting.

I was thinking L&O SVU MLB since I feel violated in a very uncomfortable way.
Glad for the night off to regroup and hope for the best.

Nat - Great Python reference. One of my favorites. Unfortunately, I se the Sox as a Norwegian Blue Parrott right about now.

Is Pena the Spanish Inquisition?

The plumage don't enter into it Rob, it's still dead!

The same could be said about the MFY. :P

Just read the Rosenthal article. I now feel dumberest.

"And nothing but a little steam. No fucking magma. No fucking lava."

fuck.

One game at a time now boys.

yeah, Rob-

I'm afraid this team wouldn't "voom" if you put 10,000 volts thru it

Ah yes, Rob in CT. Big Papi and crew do seem to be pining for the fjords....

We have them right where we want them.

election buzzword = "change"

"change" = and now for something completely different

Theo is just ahead of the curve again. Boring white guys are undervalued right now in the MLB, so he is stocking the team with them. It's just another application of Moneyball. I don't think it's any sort of conscious decision, but when his spreadsheets spit out the top 10 undervalued players, 9 of them happen to be white.

So it's not the Red Sox are racist, it's every other team that has created the market where white players are undervalued.

See how easy it is to create wild ass theories on the Internet?

Rob,
No he's just resting.
Tom

Is yazbread going all, "Don't let us win tonight" Millar on us?

How bout a cheer for Kevin Cash's first postseason HR?? Atta boy!

How can the Rays be THAT good? Are the Sox tipping pitches or what?

Some inspiring words from JFK - I can't believe he had such foresight in 1962...
"We choose to go down 3-1 to the Rays. We choose to go down 3-1 to the Rays in this series and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

Hitter, did u read yesterday's strip?

Thought it sounded familiar. Reading comprehension, D...

Pinin' for the fjords. Ha!

Hey, on teh bright side, Kasmir's got the ball for game 5 now. Can we view this as a good thing?

Not for nothing, but you may recall that at this time last year, the canyons and fjords of Ohio rang with the battle cry

"It's Tribe Time"

Just saying.

DiceK on Thursday
Lester on regular rest on Saturday
And Then Who Knows on Sunday Night

hitting is infectious.

This is the Rays' year, I think.

They are the Obama of MLB.

Just gotta accept it and move on.

I may not be feeling optimistic, but its true perception is often more important thatn reality. The perception is the Sox are never out of a series. Whether the Sox know it or the Rays know it it doesn't matter much, as long as one of them has it in the back of their minds. One game at a time my friends.

After game 2, I thought there was some magic moJo going on with all the "J" names: Jason B.,Jason V.,Jonathan, Jon, Jed, JD, Jacoby....but now I guess it's just mo-No.

Being at last night's game blew.

That is all I can come up with right now. I think I'm gonna get myself checked out for PTSD.

no-Mo = Nomah?

Crucifiction's a doddle...

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

My heart says that we can do what we did last year and in '04. But my head says "keep your hand out of your wallet when you say that". So I'll watch and hope. Don't give up. We don't want the team to give up.

Too many injuries. But I take some solace that it appears unlikely that Manny will be in the WS this year.

Vegas puts us at about a 13-15% chance of winning the ALCS at this point.

It's interesting to compare based on the Vegas odds and Win likelihoods as to how this year stacks up against 2004 and 2007 since the "down 3 games" comparison is always made on TBS, ESPN, WBZ, etc.

We're heavily favored for tomorrow, but the two in Tampa look uglier. (Reverse Gooch: I don't think we'll win tomorrow anyways, this team doesn't "want" it.)

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Overcontent, injured and without a reliable bullpen is no way to go to the World Series, son.

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Cold, injured and with no bullpen is no way to get to the World Series, son.
