Caroling
Doug:
Do you hear what I hear?
Bill:
Santana for Lestah, Bowden, Crisp, Lowrie, Frankincense and Myrrh?
Bill:
Hello, Christmas friggin' morning!
Doug:
Seriously. I'd hate to lose Lestah or any of the prospects, but Johan Santana?!?! Holy baby wrapped in swaddling clothing.
Bill:
Said the Sox GM to the old Boss George,
You don't know what I know!
Doug:
Said Theo to the Sox fans ev'rywhere,
We will have a dynasty!
Days of feasts Sox fans ev'rywhere,
We will have a dynasty!

Oh that would be a great day. So Beckett, Santana, Mothra, Schill, and Buck????

"So Beckett, Santana, Mothra, Schill, and Buck????"
The little shepherd boy just pissed his fucking pants.

Where does Wake fit in ?
Posted by: Harwich Rich | 2007.11.30 at 09:19 AM
All this optimism and excitement is rather unbecoming for Red Sox fans ;)
Moving 3 or 4 players for 1 always worried me. Even if the one is Johan Santana.
Posted by: COD | 2007.11.30 at 09:22 AM
Is Wake even coming back? I heard he was thinking of retiring because of his back. Although I'm pretty sure we exercised his option...
"Everybody knows Santana and a World Series win/ Help to make the season bright/ Red Sox fans with their eyes all aglow/Will find it hard to sleep tonight..."
Posted by: Natalie | 2007.11.30 at 09:23 AM
I'm guessing Wake would start in the rotation, as Bucholz isn't ready strength-wise yet for the rigors of full MLB season.
Posted by: h.b. | 2007.11.30 at 09:27 AM
There has been talk of a 6 man rotation, to give Mothra the extra day and to save wear and tear on arms that are 90 yrs old, such as $chill. Wake would be # 6. That would also allow Bucholz to ease into a full season more gradually. However, if you are paying $antana a gabillion dollars, do you want him only to get 25 starts? I don't know, just saying.
Posted by: louclinton | 2007.11.30 at 09:30 AM
I never understood the 6 man rotation theory. I see the advantage of keeping people healthy but shouldn't it be used only if issues arise? Otherwise your stealing starts away from a top of the line starter and giving them to the 6th ranked pitcher on the team. Just doesn't make sense to me. Regardless it's a great problem to have and would most likely work itself out by the end of ST.

Oh, bring us Johan Santana,
Oh, bring us Johan Santana,
Oh, bring us Johan Santana--
And bring him right here!
Good tidings to you from Theo et al.,
Good tidings for Christmas and a happy next year!

//Where does Wake fit in ?//
Spot starts a la Batshit.
6-man rotation doesn't work. And remember...you can't have too much pitching.
Posted by: vermonter | 2007.11.30 at 10:04 AM
I trust the FO and I trust Theo.
Whether or not a deal for Santana ultimately happens, I think they will have made the right move.
Posted by: Youk Rules | 2007.11.30 at 10:11 AM
As long as Ellsbury and Bucholz are not in the mix for Santana I am all for it. However, the Twinkies just traded their starting short stop to the Rays so will they be happy with an untested prospect with no MLB experience??
Posted by: fernsco | 2007.11.30 at 10:15 AM
With Santana most likely moving out of Minn, how do you all think he will fare when it comes to a big market stadium that also brings in all the press coverage and fan pressure?
That would be my major worry about him coming to Boston and not working out.
Posted by: brnscofrnld | 2007.11.30 at 10:45 AM
Another 150 Million for Santana plus Lester et all? I don't know. It seems like we are just bidding up the price so the Yankees pay more.
Posted by: vasoxfan | 2007.11.30 at 10:46 AM
I wonder what the insider ethics are on this? If we are essentially bluffing to drive up the price, what happens if the Twins say, "OK, we'll take that deal." Are there rules in baseball that require the Sox to make the trade at that point? Negotiating without a good faith interest in closing the deal seems like the kind of thing that would be discouraged, and could bite you in the ass later on.

The Twins got Brendan Harris who has played SS. He played ball in the area I live in upstate NY... very good player.

//you can't have too much pitching// Didn't we have that problem a couple of seasons ago ?
Posted by: Harwich Rich | 2007.11.30 at 11:12 AM
what happens if the Twins say, "OK, we'll take that deal." Are there rules in baseball that require the Sox to make the trade at that point?
After the Twins agree to a trade, the Sox will have a period of time to negotiate a deal with Santana. If they don't come to terms on a contract extension, the trade is nullified.
Posted by: chucks | 2007.11.30 at 12:03 PM
No way do the Twins make that deal. Lester, Crisp, and a couple of minor leaguers? Hell, even the Yankees can do better than that.
Posted by: re-pete | 2007.11.30 at 12:12 PM
Hell, even the Yankees can do better than that.
Um, no they can't. They have no farm system and no position players they're willing to give up. You should read up on the latest news. Lester and Crisp could do well in MN and the two prospects we'd be giving up have some serious talent in the minors that will likely transition well into the majors (see: Hanley Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis....). Not only do we have a deep farm system that's good for us...but it means we usually get more for our prospects in trades because everyone else knows our farm system is getting good players and training them right.

It would suck losing Lester and his story. I'm fine w/ Coco going...don't know enough about Lowrie & Masterson. But Bowden played out here in the low-A Cal League - known as a hitter's league and had a ridiculous ERA. Not sure if that translates to the bigs but he has my stay w/ the team vote anyway. Which is why I'm in this office and not in Theo's.

Cheer up Bob. What you have is beer-cart in about 2 hours.
Me? I have the Magic Hat Brewery right on my way home!
BTW-Bruins are playing well if anyone cares.
Posted by: vermonter | 2007.11.30 at 02:26 PM
Vermonter, beer cart in 1 hour and 52 minutes.
Posted by: Bob | 2007.11.30 at 02:36 PM
(Homer) "Mmmm...beer cart..."
Right there at work.
God, I'm thirsty.
May the clock move fast!

{Um, no they can't. They have no farm system}
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHA
How uninformed you are Kaz
Posted by: Mrlongvowel | 2007.11.30 at 02:48 PM
Uh, Mr. Short, you conveniently left off the "that they're willing to give up" ending of Kaz's sentence.
Douchenozzle.
Oh, saw Bill Simmons' column on espn.com and had to laugh. His suggestion for when the Pat's play the Jets: put Chris Hanson, the punter, on the inactive list.
Now that's funny.
Posted by: Bob | 2007.11.30 at 02:51 PM
D'oh...beer cart in 5hours40minutes.

Beer cart ... yesterday - sad sad sad.

//They have no farm system and no position players they're willing to give up. You should read up on the latest news.//
Seems you should do the reading, slick. The Twins don't want Crisp's contract and the Yankees ARE willing to part with Melky Cabrera - I believe he is a position player, is he not. Yeah, I thought so.
Posted by: re-pete | 2007.11.30 at 02:54 PM
Ug, I need it, SS. For some reason, I'm kinda in a foul mood today.
As "Fear" once sang, "F--k Christmas."

(In best Dylan voice):
As the trolls come out from under their bridges, I'm gonna grab me a beer from one of the fridges...
Posted by: Bob | 2007.11.30 at 03:00 PM
And that last troll called Kaz "slick."
Heh.
I have to add that to the "how to spot a Skank fan" list, along with over-abundent hair gell, satin jackets, and fake gold chains.
Posted by: Bob | 2007.11.30 at 03:03 PM
So I'm a troll because I have a contrary point/opinion? I don't believe I've treated anyone any different than I've been treated, have I?
Posted by: re-pete | 2007.11.30 at 03:03 PM
Not a "skank" fan either, Bob. Nice try though.
Posted by: re-pete | 2007.11.30 at 03:05 PM
You're on a RED SOX site. If you rip the RedSox on a Red Sox site, you're going to be treated differently.
Actually, it's not so much the opinion, as the use of the word "slick."
Kinda smacks of Staten Island.

Ya scumbag, ya maggot
You cheap lousy faggot,

SDU, had an Irish contingent in Pete's last night singing that over and over.
Sadly, the bar was playing Elvis at the time...

Hmmm, not sure I really ripped the Sox either. Just said that the Lester-Crisp deal wasn't enough to get Santana.
So touchy.
Never been to Staten Island, either.
Posted by: re-pete | 2007.11.30 at 03:15 PM
So touchy.
Definitely does seem a bit more surly than lovable today.
I blame the short days and long nights.
Posted by: h.b. | 2007.11.30 at 03:21 PM
SDU, any petechiae involved?
And re-pete, I said I was in a foul mood. It's just when you wrote "seems you should do the reading, slick," to a prized member of this site, it pissed me off.
One hour and three minutes until beer cart...
Posted by: Bob | 2007.11.30 at 03:24 PM
Yeah, the prevalence of petechiae proved (or made it extremely likely) that the death was by 'mechanical asphyxia' rather than blunt force trauma which was kind of good for us. Luckily, thanks to you and Natalie, I had studied up on old episodes of CSI so I had it covered.
Posted by: soxdownunder | 2007.11.30 at 03:27 PM
I got your surly and lovable right here, biotches.
That repete guy was so lame and innocuos [sp], that I just though he was a spam bot that Hank S fiddled with in his spare time.
You have to admit, Hank S. definitely looks like a fiddler.
memo to Yank fans: Santana or no, you mofo ship has sailed, bro. You got nothing but a bunch of sex-addicted honks and that Joba dude, whose head might explode by August.

I don't think it's BigLie, SDU.
He'd have to leave the comfort of his underground bunker (AKA, "Mother's Basement"), to perform any operation like that.
And that's where he keeps his twinkies and ho-hos.
